Antique Auctions featuring  Kentucky Rifles and Accouterments

Buying: Price, Cost , Value

Guidelines

****Item of art have "no fair market value". The price is an agreement between the buyer and seller. Seek advice from experienced and knowledgeable collectors. However, they are unique items that may not come your way again. But there are often similar items waiting in the future.

**** It has been practice in recent years for prominent auction houses to post realized "prices" +/- buyers commison ( usually 18-25%) after their well advertised auctions. You can access their site information usually with providing them your email. This will provide a "relative "reference  for value at the auction date. Value changes with time. Description of condition and attirbution are often open to opinion; assessment is best done "hands on." Most auction houses pubish value estimates before the auction; it is their best "guess" at value. Some auction houses provide lower than expected or fair estimates to attract attention. Analysis post auction when "fair estimates " are provide usually reveals  a significant variance...some high, some low, many within the range. Better auction houses will not sell an important  item signifcantly below it "known or believed value."  PS: You may find the exact gun your are looking at to buy !

*****If you know the bidding audience in a particular auction or for a specific item and you "win" just above the "dealers"present , you probably have a good deal as they will need to add a signifcant mark-up for resale ...they have to do so as they are in business.

****Purchasing for "Investment" is risky as in all the categories of fine arts. For example, review prices af American Antique Furniture over the last few decades.

**** Respectfully assume all stated prices are negotiable. Its is proper to make an offer. Beware of items without a ticketed or advertised price from a dealer.

**** Internet auctions are particularly risky.
